R&B Birthday Brawl & Toni Braxton Heats Up Soul Train Awards

Posted on Monday, November 30th, 2009 at 1:57 am

trey21

The streets are on fire!!! Sources claim that on Saturday night two R&B singers, Trey Songz and Joe, came to blows:

“Both Joe and Trey were seated together in the VIP section at a New Jersey club. Everything was fine at first, with the two guys hanging together and drinking. But as the liquor flowed and the night went on, one of Joe’s friends got into an argument with one of Trey’s friends. And before long, all heck broke loose. The entire VIP section started brawling — including Joe and Trey Songz. Trey didn’t get anything too bad, but Joe and his people were beat up pretty badly.”

I’m sure both Trey and Joe will deny playing a part in the melee. But witnesses say those two were definitely throwing bows!!

On another (more positive) note, Check out Toni Braxton tearing down the stage with Trey Songz at The 2009 Soul Train Awards. Homegirl’s clearly still got it!!!

American Music Awards Recap & Performances

Posted on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 1:48 am

The major question I am hearing today from folks is “Can you believe Taylor Swift beat out Michael Jackson for Artist of the Year” at the 37th annual American Music Awards????? The show aired live last night from L-A’s Nokia Theater. Bitter sentiments are mainly that if they were going to nominate the deceased icon, then they better damn well have known he would win- otherwise the loss looks disrespectful. Thoughts??

At least Taylor was classy enough to thank the Jackson family for the support they’ve shown her. Michael won overall Favorite Male and Male R-&-B Artist, both accepted on his behalf by brother Jermaine.

Lady Gaga Gets my vote as the most entertaining performance of the night! Check it out for yourself…..morbid yes, but at least she puts on a show!

Ne-Yo introduced Rihanna, one the evenings most anticipated performers. Clad in a mummy-inspired form-fitting bodysuit with laser beams that shot from the shoulder pads, she performed two tracks from her new disc Rated R — “Wait Your Turn” and “Hard.”

The Black Eyed Peas took the first award of the evening for Favorite Band, Duo or Group. The group’s Will-I-Am thanked his mom and the fans but I couldn’t stop laughing at his James Brown wig!! lolol

Beyonce won Favorite Soul/R-&-B Female Artist, but was not on hand to accept since she’s on tour overseas.

Other artists who went home with trophies included Jay-Z, who took Favorite Male Artist, Hip-Hop. During his acceptance speech, he acknowledged his humble upbringing in Brooklyn, New York’s Marcy Projects as well as Alicia Keys for appearing on “Empire State of Mind”. Alicia Keys opened her and Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” with her singing the Frank Sinatra classic “New York, New York.” Unlike the M-T-V Video Music Awards, there was no stage bum-rushing from Lil Mama last night. Keys returned later in the show to perform “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart” off her new disc, The Element of Freedom.

Samuel L. Jackson presented Whitney Houston with the special International Award of Excellence. Houston followed with the night’s biggest “comeback” performance, singing “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” a track from her latest disc I Look to You. Dressed in a white one-shoulder dress, she performed without incident but fell short of the Whitney the industry once knew.

…ANNNNND as announced, Janet Jackson kicked off the show with a heavily choreographed performance, which included a medley of hits like “Control,” “Miss You Much” and “Rhythm Nation” as well as her new single “Make Me.” It was recently announced that Janet inked a deal with A&M records and may be heading out on tour with- WAIT FOR IT……..Ashanti!! (???)

Drake, Kid Cudi and Jeremih did their best stiff-record-executive impressions to introduce Mary J. Blige, who performed her new single, “I Am.” And Jennifer Lopez marked her return to the recording industry with a fight-night inspired performance of her new single, “Loubitans.” Eminem was joined on stage by 50 Cent during a medley of songs from Em’s Relapse disc.Lady Gaga

Terrence Howard Breaks Off Engagement

Posted on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

SPL10401_047

Actor Terrence Howard revealed to S2S that he’s no longer engaged to Colombian actress Zulay Henao….I guess that means no more “butt” photos for him.

Terrence proposed to his ex-fiancée in Prague while he was filming Red Tails. When we asked what happened between him and Zulay, he only answered, “That [it] didn’t work out.”

Actress Taraji Henson and Terrence Howard shared a smooch at the 2009 Soul Train Awards which will air on November 29th at 9pm on the Centric Network. But before any rumors get started, Taraji says there is NOTHING brewing between them:

“I think Terrence is an incredible man, and he’s going to be incredible to some woman, but I’m not her,” Taraji continued. “I would rather keep Terrence as a really close friend and in my life forever than cross that line and potentially ruin a good friendship.”

Turns out the kiss was scripted!!! Wackadocious.

From the huts to the projects to the mansion- Wyclef Jean has announced plans to release an upcoming tell-all memoir which will focus on his life from adolescence to Grammy-winning artist with The Fugees. The publisher Harper Collins announced in a statement Monday that the book will cover Jean’s life, from his childhood in rural Haiti to his musical career and philanthropic work.

The American Music Awards are about to get another boost of star power. Rihanna has been added to the lineup for the 2009 AMAs.

Sources exclusively tell Rap-Up.com that the “Russian Roulette” singer will take the stage at the 37th annual show on Sunday, November 22, a day before her fourth album Rated R is released on Super Monday.

Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Black Eyed Peas, and Taylor Swift have previously been announced as performers. The AMAs will broadcast live from Los Angeles’ NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on Sunday, November 22, at 8 p.m. EST/PST on ABC.

Michael Jordan’s son, Marcus Jordan , is causing some strife by opting to take the court wearing his famous father Michael’s Air Jordans rather than shoes from Adidas, which has an endorsement deal with the University of Central Florida. U-C-F athletic director Keith Tribble says the decision is up to Marcus, citing a precedent set with a U-C-F football player who wore a different brand of shoe due to the fit. But Adidas spokesperson Andrea Corso tells C-N-B-C, “We are in negotiations for a future relationship regarding the broader U-C-F athletic program. What I can say is that these relationships are based upon agreed deliverables for both parties.

“Kelly Rowland has been working on her first post-Columbia and first post-Mathew Knowles album. Producer Rico Love, who wrote Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” says he’s helming the bulk of the album and told Rap-Up.com that it should be done by the holidays. Kelly doesn’t have a new label yet, but she’s reportedly in talks with E-M-I, which would make her labelmates with former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett.

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys Set To Perform & More Tidbits

Posted on Monday, October 19th, 2009 at 12:41 am

Take 2!!!!! Jay-Z and Alicia Keys will take the stage again to perform their duet “Empire State of The Mind” at this year’s American Music Awards, November 22nd at L.A.’s Nokia Theater at 8 p.m. on ABC.

“We are thrilled to have Jay-Z and Alicia Keys on stage together for the 2009 American Music Awards,” the show’s producer Larry Klein told Access Hollywood. “Both are such talented artists, it is sure to be a memorable performance.”

I hear Men in Black will be posted around the Nokia Theater perimeter to ensure Lil Mama doesn’t come within 20 feet of the stage!!

day-26

Speaking of the AMA’s, It was looking grim for Day 26 with news of former boss Sean “Diddy” Combs jumping off the Warner Music Group ship for Interscope. But things started looking up again after the guys snagged an American Music Awards nomination last week for Favorite Group, Band or Duo.

The group’s Brian Andrews says, “It feels amazing to be recognized by the American Music Awards committee.” And bandmate Willie Taylor adds, “Just being nominated is a feeling that we cannot describe.”

kandi-burress2

Kandi Burruss is picking up the pieces after the death of her former fiance, Ashley “A-J” Jewell, announcing the October 29th digital release of her E-P Fly Above. In addition to the title track, the E-P includes “Trade Him In” featuring Gucci Mane and the Jazze Pha-produced “Must Be Good.”

aj-jewell2

The latest developments on AJ’s death come from Dr. Kelly Rose of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office in Georgia. The doctor told E! News that Jewell may have suffered from sickle-cell anemia, a blood disorder that could have contributed to his death during a bar fight outside an Atlanta strip club.

Dr. Rose says, “In certain states of stress, the red cells actually become deformed. They deliver oxygen to all parts of your body, but when they have this sickle shape, there’s a backup or plug-in that happens. It’s especially bad in your lungs.” A final report is pending.

In the true fashion of CP time, or “colored people’s” time, DMX showed up an hour and a half late for a scheduled performance on Saturday in Colorado, and caused a riot. Check out the clips…

Hopefully next time, X can learn how to be prompt to avoid a disturbance like this from happening again.

And I gotta give some love to fellow blogger Gyant of Gyantunplugged.com Dude is hysterical on the red carpet!! See, bloggers CAN get along…..others should take note.

The BET Hip-Hop Awards 2009 took place Saturday night at The Atlanta Civic Center and will air on Tuesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. But don’t expect to see Kanye West on the show.  He was a no-show even though he was nominated for nine awards, including best live performer. Sources say he’s planning to lay low for a while while he prepares to check into alcohol rehab.

T.I., who is locked up in an Arkansas penitentiary on a federal weapons conviction, won the best collaboration award with Rhianna for the song “Live Your Life” and the album of the year award for “Paper Trail.” His fiancee Tameka “Tiny” Cottle accepted his awards at the ceremony in Atlanta and read a letter by the rapper, who began serving a year long sentence in late May.

“Although I’m not there with you all, I’m there in spirit,” Cottle quoted the rapper as writing. “My road to redemption is almost over. … Thanks for the support.”

Obama Wins The Nobel Peace Prize

Posted on Friday, October 9th, 2009 at 11:17 am

obama-peace

President Barack Obama on Friday won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”

Obama’s name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president. The committee said it attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

“Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play.”
