My One On One Interview With Zoe Saldana Gets “Real”
Zoe Saldana is one of the stars of the latest Star Trek installation. “Star Trek: Into The Darkness” hit theaters yesterday and the cult followers have already descended on the film. Zoe has quite a buzz right now following her provocative Allure magazine interview in which she poses nude and openly discusses her possible interest in the same sex.
I celebrate her accomplishments and her boldness…..But can you imagine my surprise when Zoe became snappy with me during this interview. As a matter of fact, I think she was flat out rude at one point, not only to me, but to fans who waited all day to hear her interview. Maintaining class is important to me so I tried to remain professional. However, Zoe should work on her public relations. An interview is exactly that- AN INTERVIEW. If there is a subject you don’t want discussed, then perhaps you shouldn’t make it a headline in magazines on your publicity tour. Good Luck on the new film lady!
Check out the interview and the transcript below:
Egypt: Oh my goodness. Zoe there is so much to talk with you about right now. You know you’re all over the blogs and the magazines. There’s such a buzz.
Zoe: {Laughs} Good because we’re selling a movie. It’s good for the cast and me you know on people’s minds. That way they’re inspired to go watch Star Trek.
Egypt: So the new installation is out. It hit theaters yesterday. Star Trek Into Darkness. Tell us about your role in the film.
Zoe: I play Uhara and it’s a role that I really enjoyed doing and I was very very happy to be able to come back to it.
Egypt: You know for those of you that don’t know Star Trek is…it’s a remake of a classic and I think it’s very difficult sometimes to remake movies especially that have a cult following. When you guys first came back with Star Trek did you experience any backlash at all from the ‘Trekkies?’
Zoe: No this time around you know we just felt much more relaxed and happy because we had already done it the first time and knowing that it had been received so well coming back, it just made us feel more comfortable.
Egypt: I’m excited to see it myself. We’re going to see it over the weekend. But girl we gotta talk. Now Allure magazine, if you haven’t picked up Allure magazine, she’s on the cover, very beautiful, very nude also. What made you decide to show allll your stuff?
Zoe: I’ve always wanted to do something like that. I’m an artist. I don’t believe that the body feeds, I think it’s the mind and that’s the way that I was raised. So I wanted to do something different besides of everything I’ve done before and that never happened before with a magazine where the creative director and the editor approach you and they ask you to collaborate with them in terms of what you want your story to look like. And we were all on the same page. We wanted it to be sort of bare skin and just be honest and very bold.
Egypt: So this was a stripped down Zoe Saldana and so the cover was symbolic of what we were going to get from the article.
Zoe: Yes absolutely. It’s kind of much more similar to who I really am. You know, I’m not always dressed to the nines at home. I’m barely wearing any clothes. I’m Latin so we walk around very free.
Egypt: {Laughs} Alright now Zoe, in the article, you make some extremely bold statements but I think sometimes what happens is you know once the press gets a hold of it and they stretch it all into different contortions and they misinterpret things… there was a statement where you said in the article, that you could see that maybe you would end up with a woman raising your children. What did you mean by that? Did you mean with a nanny or did you mean in a woman on woman relationship?
Zoe: I meant what I meant. Right now my whole life I’ve been attracted to men, but if one day I wake up and I’m attracted to a woman I am going to go in that direction and I’m not going to ask anybody for permission because it is my life, therefore it is my decision only.
Egypt: OWW!!! Zoe have you ever felt like you might have been attracted to a woman before? Has that feeling hit you yet?
Zoe: No, like I said, I’ve been attracted to men up until now but if one day that changes, it’ll change.
Egypt: Hmm… You know what? You are so good with it. You just leave everybody curious, like I’m going to give you a little bit and I’m going to pull it back and that’s all you’re going to get.
Zoe: {Laughs}
Egypt: Zoe, since you seem very comfortable, with some of the controversial questions, because clearly you’re comfortable in your own skin, let me throw one at you that people have debated for years. As a beautiful woman, as a Latina woman, you’ve dated what- everything- black men, white men, Latin men, yes?
Zoe: Yes.
Egypt: Which do you prefer?
Zoe: That is literally the most arbitrary question you can ever ask somebody because I see the soul so if that comes in any package I am not going to have a problem with it. Literally there’s not one preference, there’s not one demographic that makes me weak at the knees. To me, if a man has all the virtues that I’m looking for in a man, it’s green means go for me.
Egypt: She is so good. She’s just like woop, I’m going around that one and handle that. Actually I’d like to touch on the Nina Simone biopic.
Zoe: We already shot it last fall. I cannot wait for the time to come for us to be promoting Nina so that we can go into depth in every conversation that may come in my direction. But right now we’re promoting star Trek and that is the movie that I feel the most excited about right now and because we are on Paramount’s dime and time, {laughs}, I can only talk about Star Trek right now.
Egypt: Well I appreciate and I can respect that and I understand that they want to promote that movie but we’re also on the radio in Atlanta and you’ve got a lot of fans here who want to know all about you- every aspect- so I’m sure Paramount can understand that we’re asking questions that the fans want to know. So getting back to Star Trek then, what do you want folks to know about the movie?
Zoe: It’s literally, it’s why we go to the movies. This movie represents the reason why we go to the movies. To buy our popcorn and sit down and be taken for a ride from the beginning to the end.
Egypt: Well I’m exited to see it. Guys, it’s in theaters…Zoe Saldana… make sure you check it out. Continue to be you. Obviously comfortable in your own skin. Beautiful and extremely talented. We love you girls.
Zoe: Thank you so much!!!
