Marvin Gaye’s Son To Lenny Kravitz: “Please Don’t Play My Dad!”

Marvin Gaye’s son, Marvin Gaye III, is longtime friends with Lenny Kravitz, but that’s not stopping him from asking Kravitz to not play his father in an upcoming biopic.

Kravitz is set to play Gaye in “Sexual Healing,” which will focus on Marvin’s life when he battled drugs and depression back in the 80′s. Gaye III says it is “shameful” that Kravitz joined the project. He told TMZ,

The producers and directors of this film are very wrong and shameful … [They're] trying to do a film about a low period in his life. They don’t even know the whole story.”

Marvin’s son and Kravitz were childhood friends and still friends so he wants to “talk to him about why he would do this.” He’s met with lawyers and they’re trying to stop the production. Kravitz was contacted in regards to this, but no word yet.

Multiple Grammy winner, entrepreneur and actress Beyoncé will be the focus of an intimate feature-length HBO documentary film debuting Feb. 16, 2013, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Directed by the superstar, the film is a fusion of video that provides raw, unprecedented access to the private entertainment icon and high-voltage performances.

The film sheds light on her childhood in Houston, with home movies revealing the close bond she built with her family and charts the challenges Beyoncé felt when she decided to manage her career and build her own company, Parkwood Entertainment. It also captures the intense physical and emotional demands she goes through in the studio, preparing for live performances, running a business and her family life, including her return to the spotlight after the birth of her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, in January 2012.”

‘The Best Man’ Sequel To Be Released In 2013

The 1999 film, “The Best Man,” will have its sequel released in 2013, according to Black Film. Michael Lee is said to be writing and directing the film alongside Sean Daniel as co-producer.

The original film starred Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Nia Long, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun and Melissa DeSousa. When the film first opened it grossed $35 million. Lee said,

The Best Man was the right film at the right time. There were few films prior or since that film that spoke to the generation of African-Americans who I knew, lived, worked, loved and laughed with. I’ve been gratefully astounded over the years at the audience response to the film. People have often asked “Whatever happened to those characters? Did Jordan ever find a man? Does Murch stay with Candy? Do Lance and Mia live happily ever after?” I have never really taken the time to answer those questions. But they keep getting asked and in light of how it is in heavy rotation on cable TV it very well may be a sign that those questions need to be answered.”

It hasn’t yet been confirmed whether or not the original cast will be featured in the sequel. The release date has been set for November 15, 2013.

Are you looking forward to the sequel???

Beyonce Drops Out Of Clint Eastwood’s “A Star Is Born” Remake

Beyonce has announced that she had to drop out of Clint Eastwood’s “A Star Is Born” remake due to conflicting schedules. She told E! News,

I was looking forward to the production of ‘A Star Is Born’ and the opportunity to work with Clint Eastwood. For months we tried to coordinate our schedules to bring this remake to life but it was just not possible. Hopefully in the future we will get a chance to work together.”

We first heard of the collaboration between the “Dreamgirls” actress and the Oscar-winning director in January of 2011. Beyonce was set to play the lead role, but since she has dropped out that role has yet to be re-cast.

Eastwood’s film would be the fourth version of ‘A Star Is Born.’ Janet Gaynor and Fredric March starred in the 1937 original, Judy Garland and James Mason were the leads in 1954 and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976.

Nia Long Would Be ‘Honored’ To Have A Part In Aretha Franklin Biopic

Aretha Franklin has approved a treatment for her upcoming biopic and is said to have ordered a script as well.

The cast so far that Franklin has picked includes Dorothy Norwood, Karen Clark and La Shun Pace to play the Clara Ward singers. Actress Nia Long recently covered ESSENCE and marvels at the very thought of being a part of the film.

I would be ever so honored. She’s an icon and I’m sure there’s more to her story than the world knows.”

Long was named on Franklin’s actress wishlist, but hasn’t been contacted to take part thus far. She did have a message she wanted to send to the iconic Queen of Soul,

Aretha, if you’re out there and you’re reading, count me in!”

The release that Franklin’s rep put out said the singer is currently negotiating with producers and directors and says the film will be “an epic tale with probably the most starring and supporting roles since Roots.”

Jennifer Hudson and Audra McDonald are said to still be in the running for the lead role.

Who do you think Aretha should cast as the lead? Are you rooting for Nia?
