Jordin Sparks On Whitney Houston: “She Was Like A Mother To Me” On Sparkle Set

Jordin Sparks is just 22 years old and began her acting career alongside one of her idol’s.

Whitney Houston played Jordin’s mom in the highly anticipated film, “Sparkle,” a remake of the 1976 classic. For Houston, who passed away at the age of 48 in February, this was her final film, while it was Sparks’ first. The “American Idol” winner told Redbook,

I get so overwhelmed because it’s my first film [and it's] so deep and heavy. I got to work with one of my idols and sing with her, and she even played my mother. I don’t know if anything will ever be as good as this.

Sometimes I ask myself, why did I deserve to have a part in a film like this? I don’t want this to come off crazy, but somebody said to me, ‘It’s like Whitney essentially passed the torch.’ And to hear that, it’s just nuts.”

During the film’s production, Sparks said Houston was always checking up on her.
For me, she took on the mother role because my parents weren’t there [during film production]. She was always asking, ‘Did I feel comfortable? Did I need anything?’”

There are a few scenes in the movie that feature heavy drug use which Houston struggled with throughout her life, and Sparks told the magazine that she feels Whitney wouldn’t have shied away if asked about it.

There are certainly some themes in the movie that everyone would have wanted to ask Whitney about like, ‘Did you relate your own life to this part,’ which I’m sure she would have answered honestly. The cool thing about Whitney was that she was not scared to talk about or confront the things she had gone through.”

Sadly, this film does have a somber aspect behind it, as it is the last time we all get to hear new music from Whitney and her beautiful voice. Sparks says, since Houston’s untimely passing, “I do think there is a different aura around the film now.”

Sparkle, which also stars Tika Sumpter and Carmen Ejogo, hits theaters August 17th. Are you looking forward to seeing this movie???
