Senate Passes Healthcare Bill!! One More Step To Go…

Posted on Friday, December 25th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

senate

The Senate passed President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform bill at 7:00 a.m. yesterday (thurs.) morning without a single Republican vote. The 60-39 landslide victory moved the bill through the body and now calls for the Senate’s version of the bill to be merged with the House of Representatives’ version that was previously passed in November.

The House of Representatives’ bill was much harder to pass and narrowly missed opposition with a 220-215 vote, with one majority vote coming from a Republican.
Conference committee negotiations will meet to discuss the merging of the two bills. Both bills call for extending healthcare coverage to 30 million more Americans. The major point of contention is whether or not the bill will include a public option, and whether or not the government will impose a fine on anyone who does not have health insurance.

It’s disturbing that they are actually considering “fining” folks for not having healthcare. Hello@!!! If they can’t afford healthcare, then what makes you think they can afford a fine? I’m sure EVERYONE WANTS HEALTHCARE…..just make it affordable!

The Nations Capital Legalizes Gay Marriage

Gay marriage supporters have to be overcome with joy after the nation’s capital voted to legalize gay marriage!

The bill, introduced by gay city councilman David Catania, was signed into law by Mayor Adrian Fenty and is expected to go into effect around St. Patrick’s Day.

Most members of D.C.’s city council voted in favor of the move, with two votes opposed; one of which came from none other than former mayor turned city councilman, Marion Berry.

Gay rights activists are expected to use this momentum to gain other victories in other arenas after taking serious defeats in New York, New Jersey, and Maine.

Opponents of the new measure, such as the Archdiocese of Washington, are prepared to keep fighting against a move that they see as the end of traditional family values and a precursor to the downfall of society.

Members of Stand4Marriage, a group in favor of marriage in its traditional sense, have appealed to a district elections board with hopes that a referendum would be put on the ballot so that the people can have a say in the matter, with group attorney Cleta Mitchell noting that the law is a “decision for the people, not a dozen people at city hall.”

Pres. Obama Gets Tough With “Fat Cats”

ABC News has more details from Obama’s meeting with top banking executives on Monday — according to their White House source, the President told the bankers that they were like “overpaid pitchers on a team doing poorly.” The subject was executive compensation. “The concern is less when your team is successful,” Obama added, “but you guys didn’t win the World Series this year.”

Those aren’t the only harsh words Obama has had for bankers recently. In his 60 Minutes interview which aired last Sunday, the President called them “fat cats,” as in: “I did not run for office to be helping out a bunch of fat cat bankers on Wall Street.”

Black Caucus Goes After Obama

Obama 2008

The Congressional Black Caucus made good on its promise to confront President Obama, arguing that the country’s first black president isn’t doing enough to help African-Americans in the tough economy. After withholding their votes on a comprehensive financial services bill during a congressional meeting this week, 10 Caucus members vowed to put pressure on the White House to do more.

Obama Black Caucus

Maxine Waters of California tells The Hill, “We can no longer afford for our public policy to be defined by the worldview of Wall Street,” adding that her group is meeting with the heads of the nation’s financial regulatory agencies on foreclosure and lending issues. They’re also lining up meetings with President Obama’s advisers and working on a proposal to create jobs that they hope will become a major focus of discussion among House leaders.

Are they acting like crabs in a barrel? Or do they have a point? Was Obama all talk and no action?? Sound Off….

President Obamas War Address

Posted on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 at 3:28 am

President Obama laid out his plan for sending 30 thousand more troops to Afghanistan during a speech last night at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He wants to start the deployment quickly, within six months, with a goal of beginning a pullout in mid 2011 and having most troops out by 2013.

Some highlights of the speech:

  • Obama called Afghanistan and Pakistan “the epicenter of the violent extremism practiced by Al Qaeda.”
  • He rejected parallels to Vietnam, noting that we have a broad coalition of allies, that the insurgency isn’t popular in Afghanistan and that we were attacked from Afghanistan.
  • His goals are to “deny al Qaeda a safe-haven…reverse the Taliban’s momentum and deny it the ability to overthrow the government…and strengthen the capacity of Afghanistan’s security forces and government.”

In conclusion, the president insisted, “It is easy to forget that when this war began, we were united — bound together by the fresh memory of a horrific attack, and by the determination to defend our homeland and the values we hold dear. I refuse to accept the notion that we cannot summon that unity again.”

Republicans were generally supportive, though most questioned the president’s 2013 deadline. Democrats were split, with many asking whether more troops is the answer to defeating the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

They Crashed The White House??!

Two aspiring reality tv stars managed to sneak into the White House for a dinner party last week and have been the talk of the office ever since. It even landed them an invite to another government event:  A hearing at held by The House Homeland Security Committee on Thursday. The men in black want to know how the couple managed to give security the slip.

In a statement posted on the committee’s website, Chairman Bennie G. Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, said he had requested that Tareq and Michaele Salahi testify before the panel. Also asked to appear was Mark Sullivan, head of the Secret Service, which handles security for the White House. Sullivan has formally apologized for the incident, which he called an embarrassment to the agency. (Damn Right!!!)

The Salahis, who were not on the official guest list, attended the state dinner for the Indian prime minister last week and even shook hands with President Obama and others on the receiving line. The couple reportedly were in the running for a reality television show.

Two questions come to mind with this story…. Shouldn’t some heads be rolling over there at Homeland Security? And isn’t crashing the white house a criminal offense??? It should be, or else EVERYONE will be jumping the white house gates for a little publicity.

oprah-obamas

In other white house news, Oprah Winfrey will sit with her favorite couple –the Obamas – for a holiday special airing December 13th on A-B-C. The hour-long Christmas at the White House will feature Oprah visiting the president and first lady Michelle Obama as they prepare for their family’s first White House Christmas.

Diddy Fesses Up & Levi Wrecks Sarah Palin

diddy

During a recent interview with Elle Magazine, Diddy explains the subconscious baggage behind whoring. He says his “fear” has pushed him to go out with other women during a relationship:

“A couple years ago, my psychologist came to the conclusion that this is one of the big problems I have as far as maturing in a relationship,” Diddy explained in an interview. “After my father got killed, my mother said, ‘I’m never getting married again. I don’t want men around my children.’ So I’ve never actually been able to witness a husband and wife’s love. Sometimes when I see it with my friends, I just find myself staring like a child, because I’ve never actually seen it before. It’s one of the sad parts of my life. When a relationship gets to a certain point, I probably get scared and become a little self-destructive. [If caught cheating,] cry. It might not work, but it at least shows that you care. Godd*mn, this is a deep interview. You didn’t ask Will Smith none of this sh*t! Yeah, it hurts me. One of my weaknesses is that I actually have a conscience.”

Is it me or did it seem like  Diddy was tearing up about his inability to commit? I definitely felt an emotional breakthrough happen and I love that he allowed himself to be vulnerable. Good Stuff Elle Mag!!  READ THE FULL INTERVIEW HERE

Prez Obama Plays Are You Smarter Than A 4th Grader?!

Posted on Monday, October 19th, 2009 at 12:37 am

obamaandterrence

President Obama made his first Presidential visit to New Orleans this week and while there he attended a town hall meeting. During Thursday’s meeting, the 44th President answered some tough questions but the toughest question of all came from a 9-year-old named Tyren Scott. The fourth grader asked him a simple question.

“Why do people hate you?”  The confused young man even added, “They supposed to love you.”

Obama gave little Tyren a hug before saying,

“First of all I did get elected President, not everyone hates me. I got a whole lotta folks. You know what is true is true, it’s like everybody’s getting mad all the time. I think that you’ve gotta take it with a grain of salt. Some of it is just what’s called politics, where when one party wins the other party feels like it has to poke you a little bit to keep you on your toes. So you shouldn’t take it too seriously.”

Obama broke it down further for little Tyren by adding,

“Sometimes I think people are worried about their own lives. A lot of people are losing their jobs right now. A lot of people are losing their health care, and a lot of people are losing their homes to foreclosure, and they’re feeling frustrated, and when you’re President of the United States, you gotta deal with all of that.”

He then reassured the young boy saying,

“I’m a pretty tough guy…you’ve just gotta keep on going when folks are criticizing you.”

All cuteness aside, I find it disturbing that President Barack Obama’s approval rating is the same as Bush’s approval rating. Especially considering it’s Bush’s mess that he’s trying to clean up!

The Obamas also posed for a flick with the Adams Family  Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, his wife and their two teenage goth daughters . This picture caused some drama because the Prime Minister doesn’t allow Spanish papers to run photos of his daughters. Once this picture hit the wires it was on the front page of every Spanish paper imaginable.

President Obama is continuing his media tour to state his case on revitalizing healthcare with appearances on Meet the Press, This Week, Face the Nation, State of the Union AND Late Show with David Letterman which he’ll stop by on Monday. This will be the president’s fifth time as a guest on Letterman-but first time since being in office. I’m sure Letterman won’t miss the opportunity to ask Barack about calling Kanye a jackass.

I know for a FACT that Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno are vexed!!
