VIBE MAGAZINE SHUTTING ITS DOORS? & More
**UPDATE** The report below has just been confirmed as true. Here’s the official statement from Vibe Editor Danyel Smith:
“On behalf the VIBE CONTENT staff (the best in this business), it is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today. We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It’s a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine’s sixteenth anniversary, it’s a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you.”
Here’s the final VIBE cover and according to Rap Radar, it will not be available on newstands:
POP THE HOOD for the original story….
Please say it ain’t so!!? We just got word that Vibe magazine is the latest magazine to close down due to the recession. Vibe has been a staple in the urban culture for 16 years, founded back in 1993 by Quincy Jones. DailyFinance.com reports:
Multiple sources both within and outside the magazine confirmed that it is shutting down. Reached for comment, chief financial officer Angela Zucconi said, “We will be making a statement by the end of the day. That’s all I can say at this point.” She referred further questions to CEO Steve Aaron, who was not immediately available. Messages left for editor in chief Danyel Smith and publishers Edgar Hernandez were not immediately returned.
This is shocking news considering I just featured an interview last month with the Editor in Chief Danyel Smith, at which time the magazine was said to, not only be doing well in this climate, but preparing to launch their new entity The Most Mag. Watch the interview here.
With the recent folding of King Magazine and now Vibe Magazine. Do you think the internet and blogs have killed monthly subscription publications?
POP THE HOOD for more mag hoopla….BUT NOT IF YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE!
AND…….DID OK MAGAZINE GO TOO FAR?????
I initially had the cover of OK magazine up in this space but decided to remove it out of consideration for Michael Jackson’s family and fans. The cover was a picture of Michael Jackson’s lifeless body being rushed to the hospital. EMT have reported that Michael was already dead upon arrival, it just had not been announced. Considering that fact, OK magazine should be ASHAMED of themselves for publishing such an insensitive image of Michael Jackson. It makes my stomach turn.
Here’s a little tidbit for those who want to party to some old school Michael Jackson music. Tomorrow night I’m gonna be at the 80′s Fresh Party at 40/40 Night Club….

For the first time in a long time I’m actually excited about a party. Straight 80′s music and I’ll be wearing my legwarmers, and scorpio dookie earrings. Come hang with us! It’s free, you just have to rsvp to the email on the flyer.

OK! Magazine did not have to show that photo of him hooked up to tubes and such. It’s absoloutely not necessary. They could have used recent photos of him rather than the one of him dead on the cover. I would hope they pull it off the stands and use something else. I don’t care if it’s used to get more magazines off the shelf to make money. It’s disgraceful.
I agree with u they should never have published that picture of Michael Jackson, that is not the image of him that i wan’t 2 remember!!!!!! They should have used a recent or even an older picture, so that we could remember the good things about him and not 2 be reminded of his tragic last picture all hooked up 2 tubes/dead. I doubt that they will remove the magazine frm the shelf and change the picture unfortunatley. I agree 100% totally disgraceful.
That photo is insensitive. That’s not how I want to remember MJ either. It makes me want to cry just even looking at it.
Egypt I applaud you for taking that photo down! Some things are just not worth being a part of. Karma will come around and bite all the people in the ass who are exploiting Michael Jackson’s death for themselves. Thank you for having a heart Egypt.
Thank you Egypt for taking the cover down. It’s just so sad that people would rather remember him for the bizarre things he’s done, than to remember this man for his music and being a humanitarian.
Not loving the Vibe cover at all. Dream looks like a naked chipmunk. WHat is this picture supposed to represent?
I want to say that that party at 40/40 was so good! If this pic doesn’t look like a porno promotion than I don’t know what is… lol… Damn VIBE I’m so sad it’s sad to see them go!!!
