Ballin: Venus & Serena In the Owner’s Box
Venus and Serena Williams are always doing things outside of tennis. They do fashion, they pitch products, and they act. Today they added another big thing to their ledger, partial owners of the Miami Dolphins. They join many new celebrity part owners of the team that include Jimmy Buffet, Gloria Estefan, and Marc Anthony. This is huge for women and Black people all over America. They aren’t the 1st black women to own a partial stake in a team but they are the most visible. It adds another dimension to their profile and shows that poor kids from Compton, CA can grow up to do big things.
The only way to get REAL wealth is to be the employer not the employee. More people need to follow their example and buy a team instead of another car with spinning rims or VIP service at the club. These girls should be the examples for young people today and with all the terrible talk about Michael Vick it is good to see that some athletes are out there in the world doing good things. Why do we talk so much about the negative and so little about the positive?

Because we’re Black thats why. If you look in the media, all you see is what Black athletes have done wrong but the mishaps of white athletes are played down like nothing major. I blame the Black athletes though, because when you get to the stage in life where your considered to have “made it,” white people do whatever they can to make sure you’re not there long. And us Black people are so ignorant that we do stupid things to set ourselves up. Vick set himself up, Plaxico set himself up, now Lil Kim…that was just some BS. Its apparent that Black atheletes and other rich Black people are becoming targets. Who gets 2 years for shooting theirself? Only a Black athelete. We have got to be smarter people! When you “make it” you have to stay two steps ahead of these whyte people that dont like the fact that you can afford a house on their street. Im glad to see some Black people doing positive things. But this will always be downplayed because “they” dont want us to “make it.” Denzel Washington visited a army base a few years ago and saw that there was a need to support the families that came to visit their fellow soldiers. He wasnt there for that, but he gave the money and how many of you knew about that? Thats what I mean….we have to be smarter and stay two step ahead in the game.
