Last night was the highly anticipated Rihanna interview with Oprah for “Next Chapter” on OWN. The two talked about many things, but a major topic that came up was Chris Brown, Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend.

Three years ago Brown beat the Barbados native and was arrested and ordered to stay away from her. Surprisingly in her interview, Rihanna said the two have been working on a friendship.

I’m single, but we have maintained a very close friendship since the restraining order has been dropped. It’s not easy.

We’ve built a trust again and that’s it. We love each other and we probably always will.”

Rumors swirled earlier this year that the former couple had reconnected in St. Tropez, and Rihanna did not deny that.

We went to a mutual friend’s party on a yacht. It’s awkward because I still love him.”

Oprah asked the 24-year-old how she feels when she does see Brown.

My stomach drops. I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me,”

Following the beating, Brown received a lot of backlash and Rihanna said she worries about him.

I truly love him. And the main thing for me is that he is at peace. I’m not at peace if he is unhappy or he is still lonely. I care. It actually matters that he finds peace.”

Asked if Brown was her true love brought the singer to tears.

Absolutely. I think he was the love of my life. He was the first love and I see that he loved me the same way. We were very young and very spontaneous. We ran free. We ran wild. We were falling in love going in at a really rapid pace and we forgot about ourselves as individuals.”

I give Rihanna a lot of props for doing such an open and honest interview. It is interesting to see her emotions so strong for Brown still, and she will probably receive a lot of criticism for it, but love is a crazy thing. She indicated that she has moved on and it seemed she was finally able to release all of the burdens she has dealt with following the 2009 incident.
